Martin Grelle

Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 PM

A member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America since 1995, internationally celebrated artist Martin Grelle's name is synonymous with the Western art world. His images of the American West, both contemporary and historical, reflect his deep understanding of the wide open vistas of the southwestern landscape and of the pioneering spirit of the people who live there. Grelle's dedication to research, exploring historical and social aspects of the old and new West is evident when standing before his paintings. Working mainly in oil and acrylic, always refining his technique, he paints with a moderate amount of detail, emphasizing color and texture to create visual imagery, and light and shadow for dramatic effect. He has received critical acclaim from collectors, his peers, and prominent art organizations. In June 2005 he became one of only five artists to have won the top award twice at the Prix de West Invitational show at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma and has won numerous other notable awards over the years. Special Guest
Doris Roberts

Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 6:30 PM

After the Arizona premiere of her newest film, Play the Game, at the Sedona Film Festival, five-time Emmy Award winner, Doris Roberts will be the featured guest at Lon’s Artist in Residence Dinner. Receiving critical acclaim for so many of her performances in her stellar career– from television, to countless movies, and 30 years on Broadway – she has become one of the most beloved performers in entertainment. To celebrate a lifetime of such achievement, Roberts was immortalized with her own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! After nine years as Marie Barone on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” which brought her international accolades as the most popular comedic actress in television, Doris Roberts returned to the movies as the star of two comedies for Twentieth Century-Fox, another for Miramax, then a drama for Hallmark, as well as a special segment of “Law & Order Criminal Intent” written especially for her.

Roberts manages to devote what free time she has to charity as Founder of Children Affected by Aids and Puppies Behind Bars. She has fought for the rights of actors against the battle of ageism in Washington, DC and was honored by Secretary of State Colin Powell for her work as a Cultural Ambassador.

Some may call this indefatigable worker an actress who has done it all, but Doris insists, “There’s always a new challenge around the corner and I’ll be ready when it comes.”

This dinner is in partnership with the Sedona International Film Festival.

Following dinner, Doris Roberts will be available for questions.

Gedion Nyanhongo
Friday, January 23, 2009 at 6:30 PM

Born in 1967 in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe, Gedion Nyanhongo has been critically acclaimed as one of the top stone sculptors in the world today, and has staged exhibitions throughout Europe and America. He comes from a family of famous sculptors that includes his father, Claude, and sister, Agnes.
Gedion Nyanhongo’s work is a revival of the realist, neo-figurative work that characterized much of Zimbabwean sculpture in the 1970s. For more than a decade, Nyanhongo has refined this style and made it his own – marked by fully animated human, animal and spiritual figures. Cultural themes emerge from his work, revealing a remarkable ability to chronicle the contemporary landscapes of both urban and rural Africa. Elegantly sculpted facial features, hands and flowing hair highlight many of Nyanhongo’s masterpieces, making his work some of the most striking contemporary sculpture today.

Zuva Gallery, Scottsdale (www.zuvagallery.com) will be representing the artist’s work at the dinner.
